Monument Valley From Moab, Utah: The Route & What to Combine

Monument Valley is about 150 miles and 2.5 to 3 hours south of Moab via US-191 and US-163. It pairs naturally with Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point at Moab, while Valley of the Gods and Goosenecks sit right on the route.
The first time I drove a guest up from the valley to Moab, they kept asking me to pull over. Not for the famous overlooks, just for the ordinary stretches of US-191 where the desert opens flat and empty and the mesas float on the far edge of it. That is the honest surprise of the Moab run. It is a two-and-a-half-hour highway that never once feels like filler, and it drops you between two of Utah's greatest concentrations of rock: the arches and canyons around Moab at one end, the buttes of Monument Valley at the other.
How far is Monument Valley from Moab?
Monument Valley is about 150 miles and roughly 2.5 to 3 hours south of Moab, driving US-191 down to Bluff and then US-163 the rest of the way. It is an easy half-day of driving with real scenery the whole route, and most people build it as an overnight rather than a rushed there-and-back. The distance is comfortable, the road is paved and open.
Unlike the long haul from Las Vegas, this one is genuinely doable in a morning, which is why so many Moab visitors add the valley to the end of their trip. What trips people up is not the driving but the gate itself. Monument Valley is Navajo Nation land, not a US National Park, so your America the Beautiful pass does nothing here and there is a separate entrance fee of about $10 per person paid at the gate, with hours set by Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation. Budget that on top of your Moab park fees.
What is the route from Moab to Monument Valley?
The route is simple: US-191 south from Moab through Monticello and Blanding to Bluff, about 110 miles, then US-163 southwest through Mexican Hat to the Monument Valley entrance, about another 40 miles. It is two roads, no tricky turns, and the buttes announce themselves long before you arrive. The whole thing breaks into three easy legs.

What should you stop for between Moab and Monument Valley?
The best stops sit in the final 45 miles: Bluff for its historic fort and river bend, Valley of the Gods for a free self-drive through a miniature Monument Valley, Goosenecks State Park for the deep San Juan River meanders, and Mexican Hat for its balancing sombrero rock. All of them are minutes off US-163. These are the reason the run rewards a slow half-day.
Valley of the Gods is the one I push hardest, because it is free, has no gate, and few road-trippers know it. It is a 17-mile graded dirt back road on BLM land that passenger cars can usually manage when dry, laid out on Wikipedia's Valley of the Gods page. Just remember it is a self-drive with no Navajo guide and it sits outside the tribal park, so it does not replace a Monument Valley tour. What can you combine at Moab?
Moab is the base for three heavyweight parks: Arches National Park just north of town, Canyonlands National Park at Island in the Sky, and Dead Horse Point State Park on the same mesa road. Give Moab a couple of days for those before you drive south, and Monument Valley becomes the finale of a bigger red-rock trip. The two ends of the drive complement each other perfectly.
Arches packs its namesake spans into an easy park loop just five miles from town, covered on Wikipedia's Arches National Park page, while Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point share the mesa west of Moab with canyon overlooks that rival the Grand Canyon for drama. When you finally reach the valley, the paved loop road is only the opening. Should Monument Valley be a Moab day trip or an overnight?
You can do it as a long day trip, roughly six hours of round-trip driving plus your time in the park, but an overnight is far better. Staying at The View inside the park or Goulding's just outside puts you there for sunset and sunrise, which is when the buttes actually earn their reputation. A day trip only ever catches the flat midday light. One night changes the whole experience.
If your schedule forces the day-trip version, leave Moab early, drive the 17-mile loop yourself in the morning, and turn back after lunch. But the honest advice from someone who watches the light change every evening is to give it the overnight. The drive is too good and the sunset too special to bookend with three hours of highway each way.
